Discover Stephanie’s travel profile and all her favorite trip itineraries.
“We enjoyed our trip to Easter Island and the surroundings of Santiago so much that we felt like discovering a bit more of the beautiful nature this country has to offer. We had heard people in Chile mention how charming Chiloe Island was with its unique architecture and culture and became intrigued by it! As it is situated on the way down to Patagonia it seemed the perfect stop before exploring one of the most beautiful national parks on earth: Torres del Paine.

30 min
Santiago
  • We stayed with some friends but we heard good reviews of the hotel Noi in Vitacura. Prices per room start at 200 US$.
  • If you have half a day to spend in Santiago before your next flight, here are some options:
Cerro San Cristóbal with the Metropolitan Park. We took the cable car up to enjoy the amazing views over the whole city.
Barrio Italia has got a Brooklyn feel to it. We spent a few hours, checking out the independent design boutiques and relaxing in one of the secret courtyards of the countless beautiful cafés.
3-hour free walking tour of the historic part with Santiago’Otop. You leave the tip you think is fair! (www.otoptours.com). A fun way to find out a bit more about the history of the city and the country.

CHILOE ISLAND

Chiloé
  • We stayed at  Hotels Palafito 1326This charming wooden hotel lies in the quirkiest street of the capital Castro of the island. Surrounded by typical colorful wooden houses, it offers the best views of the town. The rooms are decorated with handcraft from the island with taste and breakfast is fresh with delicious home-made cakes. The view from the breakfast room makes the perfect start of the day!
  • Town of Dalcahue with its local handcraft market followed by the discovery of Quinchao Island with the two main towns of Curaco de Vélez and Achao. We had lunch in one of the small restaurants opposite the beach of Curaco de Vélez. On the way to Achao don’t miss the lookout on the islands with the Cordillera of the Andes in the background.
2-hour guided tour of Castro, the capital of the island with the receptionist of the hotel who is also a guide in French. The Chiloé archipelago has 16 18th and 19th century wooden churches that are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Castro’s church is one of them and is definitely worth a visit.
Dinner at the Cevicheria next door to the hotel: some of the best ceviches we’ve ever had!
Humboldt and Magellan penguins on Puñihuil beach

CHILOE ISLAND TO
PUERTO NATALES

2h30 car + 2h flight + 3h car
Puerto Natales
  • One night in Puerto Natales at Remota Patagonia LodgeDon’t be put off by the exterior of this hotel! A mix between industrial feel and authentic décor made our stay in this hotel very enjoyable. The inside infinity pool is perfect to relax after the drive from Punta Arenas. The rooms are really spacious and decorated tastefully.
  • The drive on the deserted straight road from the airport of Punta Arenas to Puerto Natales (it felt like being in Arizona). We saw some nandus (small ostriches), guanacos (lamas) and flamingos.
Relaxing time at the infinity pool and delicious dinner at the hotel Remota.
The view on the fjord of Última Esperanza

PUERTO NATALES TO
TORRES DEL PAINE

3h by car
Torres Del Paine
  • We stayed 3 nights at the Estancia Cerro GuidoThis estancia is situated at the borders of the park. Surrounded by the deserted Patagonian steppe, this farm has a direct view on the Torres. It remains a working farm with thousands of hectares of land and preserves the old local farming traditions. If you’re lucky, you might be able to witness sheep shearing! The 3-course meal served at the restaurant every night is delicious, made of fresh ingredients from the farm.
  • Cruise on the Lago Grey to the Glacier Grey (www.lagogrey.com) which we did before getting to the Estancia Cerro Guido.
Driving through the park and admiring its spectacular scenery while enjoying the company of the guanacos.
    Guided visit of the farm
Laguna Azul and Laguna Amarga where we saw some flamingos.
Horse riding in the Patagonian steppe admiring the mountain of Cerro Guido.

GOOD TO KNOW

  • I would recommend to rent a car to explore both Chiloé Island and Patagonia. There is a wide choice of car rental companies both in Puerto Montt and Punta Arenas airports. Be aware: there is no petrol station between the airport of Punta Arenas and Puerto Natales nor in the park of Torres del Paine so ensure your car has a full tank when you leave Puerto Natales to reach the park.
  • The weather can change quickly in Patagonia. You need to plan clothing for all seasons!
  • There is no shop nor restaurant in the park so you’ll need to plan water and snacks. For that same reason the delicious food served at the estancia came with a price. You need to inform the staff in the morning if you wish to have dinner there that same evening. Sandwiches are available to take out on request.
  • We have small children so we didn’t do any trekking in the park. However, there are a lot of options with stunning views on the Torres.
