ALBANE’S ROAD TRIP

FROM CHARLESTON TO KEY WEST

7 NIGHTS/6 STOPS

Cruising Down the Eastern Coastline in a Mustang Classic Convertible.

Albane is an active French woman and mom of twins (10) and a teen (18). She has lived all over the world, including 8 years in Asia (Hong Kong, India) and 4 years in New York. A seasoned traveler, she loves cultural discovery, new experiences, sun and enjoys vacationing in comfort. She also likes planning last-minute adventures, being spontaneous and letting herself wander around, going off course in search of hidden gems and secret places.

One of Albane’s favorite movies is Gone With the Wind.  Naturally, she longed to discover Charleston and visit this historical part of the U.S.  The city was a perfect destination, as it boasts rich culture and history that offer plenty of activities and learning experiences for the whole family. Her husband Thomas dreamed of going on the ultimate East Coast road trip from Charleston to the blue waters of Key West. And what better way to do it than cruising down U.S. Route 1 in a shiny red Mustang convertible! The trip was relatively easy to plan.»

  • We stayed at Homewood Suites by Hilton. for a family of 4 we opted for a double queen with a kitchen corner. Very easy choice. We could cook dinner for the kids in the room while we enjoyed the romantic restaurants in the city. Breakfast was included.
  • On arrival day, we got settled in the hotel and went immediately for a long walk in the city, the french district and along the seaside. Everything is beautiful.
We had lunch at Sticky fingers (smoke house restaurant) and dinner at the best Oyster Bar in Charlestone the Darling Oyster Bar.
The next day,  we visited the Mountpleasant  Boone Hall plantation & gardens. The house looks like the house in Gone with the wind. Foresee a couple of hours for the house & garden tour. The garden is exceptional. Don’t expect to find a good restaurant there. We opted for local food from the farm that we found on our way back to Charleston.

  • We walked along the river and in the historical district.
A bus or trolley tour is a great way to visit Savannah, since the city is spread out over a large area. The bus tour will give you a thorough overview of the city.
The city of Savannah also has beautiful manicured parks, horse-drawn carriages and antebellum architecture. The historic part of town is full of cobblestoned squares and parks, such as Forsyth Park, as well as the must-see landmark Gothic-Revival Cathedral, Saint John the Baptist.)

  • We stayed at Banana Resort. Very modest resort. Good value for money.
  • We spend some time on the Marathon beach in the morning.

In the afternoon, we drove to Keywest and we spent the afternoon wandering there. It takes one hour to drive to Keywest from Marathon (approximatively 80 km).

GOOD TO KNOW

  • South Carolina is primarily a Catholic state. Many shops and museums are closed on Sundays (i.e., The Slave Museum in Charleston). Please check opening days & hours before visiting.
  • We had a dinner at Lazy Days in Islamorada. We don’t recommend this place. Stay away from it. The food was not good and the service was bad.
  • Warm sweaters are recommended when visiting Cape Canaveral. It is very cold in the show rooms.
  • Advance internet reservations are recommended for Cape Canaveral.
  • We could not drive the convertible with the top down when on the highway.
  • A visit to the Everglades is recommended on the way down, rather than on the way up.  The park entrance is found as one enters Miami.
