RV rental: good to know
– We rented an RV for ten days through www.cruiseamerica.com, starting from Salt Lake City.

– We rented a 30 feet RV for our family of 5. The size was perfect. I would not have taken a bigger one as most of the campsites accept
no RV bigger than 30 feet.

Mountain hiking
1 NIGHT
  • We stayed in Colter Bay Campground, one of our favorite during the trip. The campground and the bathroom/shower facilities were very clean and well equipped. There are picnic tables and fire rings in front of the lake. We enjoyed the sunset while eating.
  • We stayed 1 night in Grand Teton National Park and had one full day in the park.

We did a one day hike that was beautiful. The hike was called Jenny Lake Trail. We loved it: we then had a quick swim in the lake. Slightly cold!

Geyser
2 NIGHTS
  • We stayed at a campground inside the Yellowstone park. This was our preferred campground of the whole trip. We just loved the place, the settings, and the area.
  •
On our way to Madison Campground, we stopped at West Thumb Geyser. Seeing the geysers for the first time was very impressive.

Then we went to Old Faithful. This place was a little bit too touristic for my taste, however, it is a must see. We finally arrived at our beautiful campground and went fishing,

On the next day we left very early to avoid the crowd. We went to Norris and stroll on the Boardwalks. The colors were magnificent. In the afternoon we went fishing close to our campground.

Hot Springs
1 NIGHT
  • We stayed in Mammoth Campground. A first-come-first-served campsite. Very basic Campground but very convenient. No shower or laundry.
  •
We loved the hot spring as we have never seen that before. The travertine terraces change constantly. We then went in the boiling river. Believe me, it is boiling hot !

In the afternoon we went for a two hours hike around our campground.

Strenuous hike
1 NIGHT
  • We arrived very late. Bridge Bay campground. This was the worst of the trip but we did not mind for one night.
  •
Seven Mill-hole was a strenuous hike but the most amazing one. I am still very impressed by what my kids achieved on that day. We only hiked one way. As we were two families, we could leave one RV at the arrival point.

Boat ride
O NIGHT
  •
We went for a nice boat ride, if you want to do it at a specific time, you should book it in advance,

We then left the park by the west side and had our best surprise just 10 minutes before leaving Yellowstone Park. We saw a Grizzly by a lake.

We drove back to Salt Lake City with a night stop-over in Idaho falls.

GOOD TO KNOW

  • Yellowstone can be cold In August. Don’t forget sweaters and jumpers. The nights are really cold.
  • Make sure you always go to the visitor center. They will help you with your hiking trails. Don’t forget to take their Junior Rangers Books for your kids.
  • Foresee enough water when you are hiking. Bring good hiking shoes as well as a backpack. This is important to plan in your holiday luggage.
  • In Yellowstone, almost all campgrounds do not have laundry and shower facilities.
  •  Your time on the road can vary dramatically as you will very often meet a herd of bison.
  • On stop 4 from Grand Teton to Yellowstone Madison, I will suggest to make it as a day trip as there is a lot of sights on the way.
  • Make sure you plan ahead your menus while shopping before entering into the National Parks. You will only find the basics in the grocery stores of the park.
